Ex-Liverpool keeper Westerveld: Mignolet has shown great character, fighting spirit

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld has praised Simon Mignolet for the way he's fought back this season.

Westerveld, who clocked up 103 appearances for the Reds under Gerard Houllier, knows better than most the kind of pressure Mignolet has had to deal with.

“I've got to give Simon all the credit," Westerveld told the Liverpool Echo.

“I think he's got better and better with every game since he returned to the side. It's not easy being the Liverpool goalkeeper. The spotlight is always on you.

“Of course he lost his place to Karius and at that stage it looked like it would be difficult for him to get back in.

“But he didn't moan, he just got on with the job and waited for his chance. What he has shown is a lot of character - a real fighting spirit.

“He has fought back from that disappointment magnificently and done a great job for the team. He's been making big saves and earning points for the team.

“He has improved in every area and is so consistent now. He doesn't go from being eight out of 10 one week to four out of 10 the next. He's been very steady and reliable."
