Ex-Real Madrid Ace Explains Why He Wants Barca to Secure Impossible Champions League Comeback

Published on: 28 February 2017

Ex-Real Madrid star Guti has shocked Los Blancos fans by revealing that he wants bitter rivals Barcelona to put off a remarkable Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain.

The player-turned-youth coach stated his desire to see La Blaugrana overturn their seemingly insurmountable 4-0 first-leg deficit and beat the reigning Ligue 1 champions to book a place in the quarter finals of the continental club competition.

However, Real fans can rest easy as, in quotes published by Marca, the 40-year-old claims that Barcelona would take their eye off the ball, where a La Liga title challenge is concerned, if they had to continue fighting for the Champions League trophy as well as Spain's top flight crown.

He told Marca: "I want Barcelona to come back against PSG in the Champions League that way they won't be able to focus on LaLiga as much."

Barcelona were royally thumped in their last-16 encounter with PSG on February 14, with Angel Di Maria, Edinson Cavani and Julian Draxler's goals sending Jose Enrique's men to a humbling and shocking defeat at the Parc de Princes.

Barca host PSG in the return fixture at the Camp Nou on March 8, and will need to perform the miracle to end all miracles if they plan on progressing to the next stage of the Champions League.

A number of Barcelona stars have come in for criticism from the club's fans this season, with centre back Gerard Pique one particular player who has been set upon in recent months due to a spate of indifferent performances and rumours that he could leave the club.

Guti, however, proposed that he would enjoy seeing the ex-Manchester United defender notch the winning goal if Barcelona did pull off the impossible and secure a 5-0 victory over Unai Emery's men on home turf in a week's time.

He added: "I want Pique to score the fifth goal because he deserves it, he is the only one facing the situation head on, despite getting criticised by all sides."
