Former Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan has disclosed why he joined Ghana Premier League Legon Cities ahead of Asante Kotoko.

Gyan, who is the top goalscorer in Black Stars' history with 51 goals, penned a one-year deal with the club on a free transfer prior to the start of the 2021/22 football season.

The 36-year-old made a return to the Ghanaian top-flight, 17 years after leaving Liberty Professionals.

Speaking to Asaase Radio on Tuesday, he said, "I came to Legon Cities because my house is in Accra but Asante Kotoko is my team and scoring against Hearts of Oak is in my DNA."

He added, "To be honest when Legon Cities played against Asante Kotoko and my own Kotoko fans booed me, to be honest that really hurt but I got over it and realised that it is all love; it did hurt though."

Gyan scored 10 goals in 16 games before he left Liberty in 2003. Since then, he has scored 168 goals for nine clubs.

He has scored more goals (6) than any African in the history of the World Cup.

Asamoah Gyan is currently unattached after leaving Legon Cities at the end of  the last season.
