Five Serie A clubs feature in Europe’s top 20 spenders this decade

Both Roma and Juventus are in the top ten European clubs for transfer fees invested into their squads since 2010, with the Serie A pair outspending Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund.

While it is not overly surprising to see Juventus feature among Europe’s elite, the Giallorossi’s presence in the top ten is more of an eye-opener, given they have not won a single piece of silverware in that time.

Manchester City, Chelsea, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United are rather expectedly the top five, with Juventus sitting sixth having spent €1,085 million on their squad, according to figures published by Football Observatory – a research group within the International Centre for Sports Studies.

Liverpool and Real Madrid fall between Juve and Roma, with the Giallorossi investing €809m on new arrivals. AC Milan and Napoli are also in the top 20, with the Partenopei splashing out €579m while the Rossoneri have frustratingly thrown €678 at new arrivals.

Roma’s spending looks less severe when you take their income into account, with the Eternal City side earning €680m in that same timeframe, trailing just Monaco (€950m) and Liverpool (€683m).

The income figures make for interesting reading for followers of Italian clubs though, With Juventus (€620m), Inter (€388m), Napoli (€370m), Udinese (€367) and Genoa (€358m) all featuring in the top 20.

Udinese and the Grifone have evidently developed something of a reputation for developing talent and selling players on at a premium, while it may come as a surprise to note Atalanta’s absence from the fees received list, particularly after their recent successes and transfer dealings.
