Flying starts for Australia, Cambodia

Australia defeated Malaysia 7-0 in Group A's tournament opener while Cambodia did even better as they defeated Timor Leste 12-0 in Saturday's later tie.

Australia, represented by their U-20 side, took barely 10 seconds to open the scoring through striker Alexander Chidiac.

Three minutes later, Mary Fowler doubled Australia’s advantage and Emily Condon scored the third in the eighth minute.

Chidiac turned up the heat to complete her hat-trick with goals in the 51st and 74th minutes while Fowler grabbed her second in the 61st minute.

Amy Sayer then completed a good night for Australia with the seventh goal a minute from the end.

“It is always pleasing to start a tournament with a win and also by such a score,” said Australian head coach Leah Blayney.

“But obviously we need to improve on certain things, especially to be more clinical in front of the goal.”

Cambodia raced to a 7-0 lead in the first half.

“Good start. Good score. I have no complaints,” said Cambodian head coach Meas Sam Oeurn.

Captain Hout Koemhong blasted in six goals (ninth, 20th, 27th, 39th, 58h, 64th minute).

Ban Cheavey (12th, 37th and 46th) hit a hat-trick, Poeurn Kunthea (61st), Norn Minea (62nd) and Chay Sreyleab (69th) completed the scoring.
