Former Barcelona Star Backs Pep Guardiola to Alter English Football Mentality at Man City

Pep Guardiola has the ability to completely overhaul the way football is played in England, according to former Barcelona star Xavi.

The midfielder told the BBC's World Football programme that the Manchester City manager has all the qualities necessary to help oversee a revamp of the football on show, particularly in the Barclays Premier League.

Xavi played under Guardiola during the pair's time together at the Camp Nou, and amassed 14 winners' medals during a golden era under the now 45-year-old.

And the 35-year-old ex-Spain international believes everyone, from players right up to fellow managers, can benefit from Guardiola's vision of the game.

Xavi said: "If there is one person who can change the mentality of English players, of English football, this is Pep Guardiola.

"I think he is one of the best coaches, and I think with his personality, his obsession with the job and his mentality he could do a very big thing there. Maybe there could be a big revolution with Pep Guardiola.

"If you see the games of Manchester City, you can see the style of Pep Guardiola."

Xavi, who currently plies his trade with Al Sadd in the Middle East, was also quizzed over whether Guardiola's influence in England's top flight would help the English national team to become a major player on the world stage again.

He continued: "Yeah, maybe. Maybe it is too much to say he can change the national team, but for now with Manchester City we can see the big change and, maybe, in the future for the national team as well."

Xavi was also asked why he felt Guardiola had been so successful during his managerial career.

The Catalan has already won 21 titles from spells at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, and Xavi puts his success down to his 24/7 obsession with the beautiful game.

He added: "His passion for football, mentality, style, everything is good when you work with Pep Guardiola. He is absolutely one of the best coaches at the moment.

"He is passionate for his style. He believes a lot in that style. He always wants that possession and he understands the game. He has made a good revolution, not just in Barcelona but in the world of football."
