Former Liverpool Defender Remains Sceptical of Emre Can's Role in Jurgen Klopp's Side

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has said that he doesn't think Emre Can should be a first team regular for the Reds, despite admitting the German has proven him wrong in recent weeks.

Can scored Liverpool's third goal during their 6-1 thrashing of Watford last Sunday, which means the clubare a point clear of Chelsea at the top of the table. The midfielder, who has now scored in back-to-back games,is vying for regular place in Jurgen Klopp'sside, with summer signing Georginio Wijnaldum.

Can is currently the preferred choice, having started Liverpool's last few league matches andex-Reds defender Stephen Warnock has admitted that he has been surprised by the German's form.

He told LFC TV (as quoted byinsidefutbol):"I was quite critical of Can after the United game. I thought he looked slow, heavy and lethargic, not fit at all.

"I thought as soon as Wijnaldum is back fit, he's (the manager) putting him back in.I just didn't think there was any sense in putting Can in the team.

"But he's proved me wrong and he looks fit, he looks stronger again. He's back to where he was the back end of last season when he looked dynamic.

However, despite the praise, Warnock still thinks that Can is behind another one of his teammates and believes thatplayershould be chosen ahead of the 22-year-old.

He added:"There is something in Wijnaldum I just like.

"He's like a (James) Milner. He's not your standout where he's doing things like (Philippe) Coutinho, but he just keeps things ticking over and he wins vital tackles."
