Former Red Neil Mellor Suggests it Is Clear That Loris Karius Is Jurgen Klopp's First Choice Keeper

Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor has suggested that it is clear from Jurgen Klopp's actions that summer signing Loris Karius is his preferred option in goal as opposed to Simon Mignolet.

The German international missed the start to the campaignwith a broken hand picked up in the club's pre-season tour, giving Mignolet the chance to stake his claim in between the sticks, and did well, saving a penalty in their opening fixture against Arsenal.

However since returning, Karius has slowly been edging his way into the mindset of Klopp's thinking, starting the last two Premier League games, and looks set to start the Reds' big clash against rivals Manchester United on Monday Night Football, despite still adapting to the English game.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Mellor suggested it is too early to judge Karius, but believes that the 23-year-old will continue to be trusted instead of reverting back to his current number one - Belgian international Mignolet.

"In terms of goalkeeper, I think you have to be fair to Loris Karius," said Mellor.

"He's had two Premier League games and while he might have looked a little unsure against Swansea, it would be hard to make a judgement so quickly.

"Mignolet will push him but I'd expect Karius to get the nod against United despite Mignolet having more experience in that respect.

"It's clear that Karius is Jurgen's number one and while it's clear he's still settling into the side and adjusting, hopefully we'll see a better performance than against Swansea."
