Former Reds Star Compares Current Liverpool Defender to Club Legend Alan Hansen

Former Liverpool midfielder Ronnie Whelan has compared Joel Matip to Reds legend Alan Hansen.

Matip joined the Anfield side from Schalke 04 during the summer, having signed a pre-contract agreement in February with his deal with the German sidecoming to an end.

He looks to have brought lots of solidity to the team's back line, impressing pundits and fans alike with his consistent performances this season.

Whelan, who made 362 appearances for Liverpool between 1979 and 1994, agrees with former Liverpool gaffer Roy Evans in thinkingthat the Cameroonian is reminiscent of Hansen, who won eight league titles at the club, along with three European Cups in an extremely successful spell.

I was working for Liverpool TV with Roy Evans and, at one point, he mentioned that Matip looked ˜Hansen-esque', Whelan said via hisIndependent.iecolumn. That's a big thing and it wasn't said lightly.

Again, it's a sign that [Jurgen] Klopp is getting the best out of his players. This is all part of Klopp's mission to reconnect people with the past but in a positive way.

I hear that he wants to move all operations to Kirkby which would allow the club to sell Melwood.

That will be music to the ears of the accountants but the reason he wants to do it is to bring everyone together under the same roof “ from the Academy up to the senior squad.

"I'm more than pleased to see [Dejan] Lovren playing so well beside Joel Matip, another big success story."
