Former Referee Howard Webb Gives Premier League Teams His One Tip for Beating Liverpool at Anfield

Published on: 29 October 2016

Former professional referee Howard Webb has given a tip to any Premier League side wanting to beat Liverpool at Anfield - make them play towards the Kop end in the first half.

Webbhas been regarded by many as one of the greatest referees in history after taking charge of a Champions League final, a World Cup final and over 500 Premier League games, andis now a refereeing consultant for the FA, as well as giving his expertise for BT Sport match coverage.

As well as this, Webb has just released his autobiography 'Man in the Middle', in which one section reveals how he believes a Premier League side has the best chance to beat Liverpool at Anfield, and that's making them attack the Kop end in the first half - the end which the Reds have scored the majority of their late winners in the second half ofmatches.

Writing in his book, via theDaily Star, Webb stated: "The laws state that the winner of the coin toss chooses the direction of play, while the loser gets to kick off.

Even so, the number of skippers who'd call heads correctly and persist in saying ˜Can we kick off instead?' was incredible.

Some players failed to understand the implications of the choice of ends, too.

Put it this way, if I'd been a visiting captain who'd won the toss at Anfield, I'd have forced Liverpool to kick towards the away end in the second half rather than have the Kop sucking in a last-minute goal.

A fair few captains didn't grasp this, though, or didn't seem to give it much thought.
