Future stars to battle for Central Asian title

Dushanbe: The path to regional glory has been set for the six participating teams in the 2019 CAFA U-16 Championship in Tajikistan.

All six Central Asia Football Association member nations are set to be represented in the competition, which puts the region’s future stars head to head in competitive action.

The round-robin tournament will run from July 26 to August 1, with matches staged in Dushanbe and Hisor.

Hosts Tajikistan will be looking to expand on a highly successful run of results in youth football, with their U-16 side reaching the final of the 2018 AFC U-16 Championship in Malaysia, which earned the nation a place in October’s FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil; only the second such qualification in the nation’s history.

Their U-16 class of 2019, under the tutelage of former Tajik international Akhliddin Turdiev, will get their Central Asian campaign underway against 2018 champions Uzbekistan before facing Afghanistan on the final day.

Uzbekistan and Islamic Republic of Iran are the two CAFA member associations to have previously been crowned AFC U-16 Champions.

All six nations in the tournament will also attempt to qualify for the 2020 AFC U-16 Championship later in 2019, with the qualifying round for Asia’s premier competition in the age group to be staged across the Continent in September.
