Gary Nevile Claims Liverpool Can Match Manchester City After Favourites Lose at Spurs

Former Manchester United defender and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has claimed Liverpool can match Manchester City in the title race, after City's loss to Tottenham on Sunday.

City had previously gone unbeaten throughout the season, winning all their Premier League matches before anAleksandarKolarov own goal and a strike from Dele Alli condemned the Manchester club to a 2-0 defeat at White Hart Lane. City noticeably struggled to cope with Spurs' aggressive style of pressing, and Neville has claimed that Liverpool can enjoy success against Pep Guardiola's side thanks to their similar style of play.

Speaking to Sky Sportsabout Spurs' win at the weekend, Neville maintained that not every team will be able to dominate City with the level that Spurs and Celtic, in the Champions League, have demonstrated, but that Liverpool could.

"Not every team will be able to achieve what Celtic are able to with their atmosphere at Celtic Park and what Tottenham can do with their incredible energy levels," Neville declared.

"Liverpool will definitely be able to do it, though."

Neville also identified City's win over Manchester United earlier in the season as a match in which Guardiola's side looked noticeably weak under pressure, despite ultimately prevailing as 2-1 winners in the derby.

"There were signs in the derby after Claudio Bravo made that mistake where United changed from dropping deeper to actually pressing City, there we signs in that game that City were a little bit more uncomfortable.

"That probably is a way forward and patterns will develop. If it was a one-off occurrence then perhaps leave it, but if is happens two or three times maybe teams will think that's the way to up against Pep's teams. That's something Pep Guardiola will have to deal with."

Jurgen Klopp's side have won plenty of admirers so far this season thanks to their high energy pressing and attractive, attacking football, and currently sit in fourth position in the Premier League, behind Arsenal only on goal difference, two points behind leaders Manchester City and a point behind second placed Tottenham.
