Gattuso: AC Milan played good football and showed character

After a last gasp victory over Roma, AC Milan coach Gennaro Gattuso was adamant that his side were more than a 95th minute winner.

A last minute Patrick Cutrone goal sent the Stadio San Siro into rapture after Federico Fazio had equalised following Franck Kessie’s opener.

“It’s a bit reductive to say that we have won the game in the last minute and that’s it,” Gattuso told the press. “The thing that I liked the most is to see that the team played great football and showed character.

“Then Roma came out [in the second half], they are a quality team and coached by a great coach. From there things didn’t work well for us.

“We dropped off in the second half, but then we had four or five chances in the second half which we didn’t exploit well enough.

“I tried to change the game because I wanted to win it. When they play together, Castillejo and Laxalt were able to open the game in the final 15-20 minutes.

“We weren’t tactically perfect. I had asked Calabria to go forward less and to get the ball to Laxalt. Cutrone is a player who, despite being too sulky at times, deserves something more. He has poison (he is lethal), as I always say.”

Gordon Singer of the Elliot Management hedge fund, which owns Milan, was in the stands at the San Siro to see the win.

“Since I arrived [at Milan] I have felt a great sense of responsibility,” Gattuso went on, “because I have always supported this club and I have had unforgettable years with Milan.

“One day, I hope as far in the future as possible, you will see me on another bench.

“Everyday life here is not something which can be described as ‘normal’, but it’s familiar to me. We are happy to have given him [Singer] such joy.

“I don’t need to be a policeman, as the players work with a great seriousness and manage themselves. After the Napoli defeat, I thought I would find a broken team, but I was happy with how they reacted and how they played.”
