Coach Gattuso offered his analysis after Napoli reached the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia on Wednesday evening: “I’m pleased because we showed we can dig in to get through.”
“I think it was a fantastic display. We showed we can dig in and Empoli made it difficult for us on many occasions.
“They have some quality young players. We managed to battle and dig in, which pleased me in terms of showcasing the team’s character.
“Some of the players who played today needed to get more minutes under their belts. We’re playing all the time and in the current situation with Covid, it’s not always easy to get that continuity. That doesn’t just go for Napoli, but I think across the board for everyone in general.
“After the Inter game, we went backwards, possibly mentally as well. We’ve been creating so much, but our finishing hasn’t been up to standard. I do, however, have faith in my team’s potential.”
With regard to Victor Osimhen’s injury, Gattuso said, “He’s been better over the last few days and the doctors have given me reassuring news. He’s started running again and we’ll evaluate when he can get back to full fitness.”
