Published on: 24 March 2023

Ghana Football Association issued a statement on Friday thanking Ghanaians for massively coming out to support the Black Stars in the 2023 Afcon qualifier game against Angola yesterday.

Ghana started the game well but couldn't utilize the chances created. Both teams entered the dressing room at halftime with no goals.

Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo rescued Ghana with a late strike in added time.

After the game coach Chris Hughton led the entire team around the stadium to thank the supporters who were still singing and dancing.

Ghana will travel to Luanda to take Angola in the return leg on Monday 27th March. Ghana led Group E with seven points and will be hoping to get a win to firmly grip the top spot.

Below is the full statement:

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) would like to put on record our sincere appreciation to all those who played various roles in the successful hosting of the match between the Ghana Black Stars and their Angolan counterparts at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

First and foremost, we would like to thank the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for offering his wise counsel and support.

The government, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, ensured that the Black Stars preparation for the match was smooth which massively helped in the hard fought win.

We also want to thank our sponsors and partners for continuously investing in the team.

Last but not the least, we would also like to thank the National Sports Authority for their effort in putting the game together.

The various religious bodies from Christians, Muslims and Traditionalists all supported the team with prayers for which we are thankful.

The media was extremely vital to the success of the team as the wall-to-wall coverage helped to secure the massive turnout during Thursday’s match and for that we are grateful.

We also want to recognize the incredible support of the fans and students who thronged the stadium to support the Black Stars to victory.

Such collective efforts will continue to play an important role in keeping the Black Stars moving in a positive direction.
