Ghana Women's Premier League: Southern Zone preview

Published on: 19 February 2021

The Women’s Premier League resumes this weekend after going on a one-week break.

We expect fireworks across the League centres in both Zones – Northern and Southern. Here is a quick Preview of matches in the Southern Zone.

Immigration Ladies v Police Ladies

Immigration Ladies will be hoping to get back to winning ways as they take on rivals Police Ladies on match day 5 in the much awaited ‘Service derby’. This fixture, one of the most appealing derby’s in the WPL calendar, will see two of the top teams in the Zone battling for three points. Police Ladies have endured an inconsistent start and were well on their way to the mark before that horrendous display at home to Berry Ladies dismantled the dream, going down 2-1 in the end. The team still has quality and only need time to explode and this fixture looks more of a catapult to glory. Faustina Kyereme and Deborah Afriyie scored to end the tie 1-1 in the 2019/20 season. Immigrations Ladies lie 7th in the table with 2 points while Police Ladies lie 5th with 4 points. considering the midfield and attacking firepower of both sides, we must expect a high scoring contest.

Berry Ladies v Thunder Queens FC

League leaders Berry Ladies play host to Thunder Quuens at the Zuka park at Madina. Berry Ladies will be looking to continue their 100% start to the season with another home win after going four games without defeat. Nina Norshie, Monica Addai and Ernestina Tetteh have made ‘the Berries’ thicker especially in attack and Coach Mercy Tagoe Quarcoo will count on the trio to produce magic on Saturday. Thunder Queens were held to a 1-1 by Immigrations Ladies on match day 4. Elizabeth Oppong again put up a splendid performance but could not win the points for her side. The team is however keeping hopes alive and will be eager to bounce back. Berry Ladies won the contest 2-0 in last seasons League with Bebe Kpozo and Faustina Akpo scoring but nonetheless, this should be an excellent game to witness in Madina.

Hasaacas Ladies vs Sea Lions FC

Hasaacas Ladies comes into week 5 as strong title contenders after dispatching Soccer Intellectuals 1-0 at Ajumako. Milot Pokua scored the only goal in the narrow win, her first of the season. The team is gradually taking shape as they sit 2nd in the zonal league log, with 10 points, 2 short of leaders, Berry Ladies. They hope to take full advantage of playing at home to edge Sea Lions on Saturday as the Sekondi Gyandu Park remains a fortress for visiting teams. Sea Lions FC are clearly struggling in the League as they languish at the bottom of the league log with no point. The Hasaacas have always had the upper hand in the fixture beating Sea Lions 3-0 last season. Janet Egyir, Milot Abena Pokua and Doris Boaduwaa were the scorers. The ‘Doooo Ladies’ obviously look the better of the two sides heading into this fixture and will no doubt be buoyed by recent performances.

Lady Strikers vs Soccer Intellectuals

Lady Strikers surprised have surprised many with their performance this season after picking up wins over Thunder Queens and Immigration Ladies. They hope to continue their winning run-on Saturday when Soccer Intellectuals come visiting. Winning away to Sea Lions in a 3-1 on match day 4 should be a boost for the team heading into match day 5. Soccer Intellectuals have experienced some highs and lows after losing two games at home. Ali Yakubu’s side succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Hasaacas Ladies on match day 4. Intellectuals are struggling to bang in the goals coming into this regional derby against a free scoring Lady Strikers side. Both teams will fancy their chances and stake a claim for the three points here.
