National League club Torquay United has signed Ghanaian defender Jacob Mensah in the ongoing winter transfer window.

Mensah, a former Crystal Palace youth player, joins the Plainmoor outfit after spending the first half of the season at The Gulls' National League opponents Maidstone, as well as previously played for Ramsgate, Weymouth, and League One club Morecambe.

Torquay's coach is similarly thrilled to add another strong man to his defense lineup for what is already set to be a busy second-half of the 2022/23 campaign, having previously shown himself at this level and earned over senior 100 matches at the age of just 22.

“Jacob is a 6’3” defender, and again, we didn’t want to be caught short of defenders at our Club. He’s quick, very athletic and I’m sure – like Nico [Lawrence] – he’ll show his prowess in the coming weeks," said coach Gary Johnson.

“We felt at this moment in time, with Saturday & Tuesday games almost all through the rest of the season, with games to be cancelled if we keep going in the FA Trophy, we needed more recruits so that you’ve got a squad of players you can call upon, and also as I always say, competition is always very healthy at this stage,"

“It was important to get a bigger squad. Players become available at this moment in time and we took the opportunity to enhance our squad.”
