Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu was in action for Newcastle United as they suffered a 5-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League on Wednesday.

Atsu, who was making his first appearance for the club since the resumption of the league climbed off the bench to replace Matt Richie in the 84th minute at the Etihad stadium.

Pep Guardiola's side took the lead through Gabriel Jesus in the 10th minute by converting from David Silva's cutback before Algeria international Riyad Mahrez made it 2-0 in the 21st minute.

It got worse for Newcastle after the break when Federico Fernandez inadvertently deflected Matt Ritchie's attempted clearance into his own net and David Silva added the fourth by curling in a sublime free-kick.

Raheem Sterling came off the bench to add the fifth for City in injury-time, rolling in from Silva's pass.

The defeat leaves Newcastle United on the 13th position of the Premier League table with 43 points after 34 matches played thus far.

Atsu has been used sporadically this season by Steve Bruce, making 24 appearances and scoring five goals in all competitions.
