Ghanaian youngster Kobbie Mainoo worked hard for his Premier League debut - Man United academy head

17-year-old Ghanaian midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has impressed Manchester United's head of academy Nick Cox with his progress.

The youngster was born in England but is of Ghanaian descent. He played for England at U-17 and U-18 levels but is still eligible to represent Ghana.

Mainoo made his Premier League debut against Leicester City last Sunday after appearing for the first team for the first time at the start of January in the Carabao Cup against Charlton Athletic and in their FA Cup win against Reading.

Mainoo's consistent inclusion in Erik ten Hag's match-day squads is not by coincidence.

Cox expressed his delight in a statement to club media: "We are always delighted when a young boy makes a debut, particularly when they start a game.

"He's had to earn that against Charlton as it's very different coming off the bench than starting a game."

Cox also credited Mainoo's success to his skill and hard work, stating that "the manager doesn't do favours. You play in the team if you're good enough.

"You don't get special treatment because you're a young lad who's come through the system, you've got to earn it. He's done that and that's great."
