The news will come as a bigblow to Los Blancos, as Kroos has become an integral part of the side ever since signing from Bayern Munich in 2014.

The German star had featured in all of Real's La Liga games so far this season and acts as a dynamic presence in the centre of the park. The 26-year-old also leads the league's assists charts with six.

Metatarsals are something of a curse to the modern footballer.Real old boy David Beckham made the bone injury famous in 2002 after sustaining the blow in the run up to the World Cup in Japan and Korea.

Wayne Rooney became another high-profile victim, after coming off in England's quarter-final defeat to Portugal in Euro 2004 with the same issue.

The typical recovery time can be anywhere from one month to three but it is safe to say that Kroos will sit out the Madrid derby, which immediately followsthe international break.
