I need more minutes to get into best shape for AFCON 2019 – Asamoah Gyan

Ghana’s all-time leading goal scorer, Asamoah ‘Baby Jet’ Gyan has revealed that he needs a couple of games to get into the best shape for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament set to be hosted by Egypt.

The veteran attacker is one of the top players named in Ghana’s final 23-man squad and will be key to the success of the Black Stars in the AFCON even though it is unclear whether he will be starting up front for the side.

Having played some minutes in the team’s pre-tournament friendly match against South Africa in Dubai yesterday, the player reminded everyone of what he is capable of doing on any given day.

In the dying minutes of the match, he jumped highest to connect to a cross and came close to scoring with his header. His effort, unfortunately, hit the woodwork as the two teams settled for a goalless draw.

Speaking in a post-match interview, the Kayserispor striker shared that he is feeling good but will need a couple of minutes to be 100% ready for the continental showpiece.

“It's a good opportunity for me. Since we got to the camp this is my first game. I played quite some minutes and I felt alright”.

“We are getting there but personally I need a couple of games to get my 100% because since we came here we have had a couple of games but this is my first game”, he said.

Commenting on his effort at goal, he noted, “The movement was alright as I had a good header which I was unlucky. But it's one of those things. At the end of the day, it was a good header. But am happy for my performance”.
