Ex-Black Stars coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor says he was happy when Otto Addo was named Ghana coach and has rallied for support for him ahead of upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Otto Addo-led team qualified the Black Stars to the global showpiece following a 1-1 draw against Nigeria in the final play-offs of the World Cup at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja in March.

Ghana will take on Madagascar and Central African Republic in the 2023 AFCON on June 1 and 5 respectively.

"I was happy with Otto Addo's appointment. I spoke to him before he took over the job. I think what he needs is support and nothing else," the former Asante Kotoko coach Akonnor said.

"We have World Cup and AFCON qualifiers coming up and that is what we must do if we want the team and the technical team to succeed."

Otto Addo became first Ghanaian to have represented Ghana at the World Cup and also qualified the team to the Mundial as a coach.

Ghana have been placed in Group H together with Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea for the World Cup which is scheduled for November 21 to December 18 in Qatar.
