Manchester United have received some bad injury news as defender Antonio Valencia is set for an extended spell on the sidelines following news that the player needs surgery on a fractured arm.

The 31-year-old suffered the injury during his side's 1-0 EFL Cup victory over rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening, and was not named in the squad for their Premier League clash against Burnley on Saturday.

Formally an attacking winger, the Ecuadorian international has been in fine form playing at right back while manager Jose Mourinho remains unsure over the future of Italian full-back Matteo Darmian, who has been resigned to the bench since the start of the season.

The club announced the injury to Valencia shortly after the line ups were announced for their home clash against Sean Dyche's Claret and Blues, and according tothe Metro,Valencia is reported to be having an operation on the fracture on Saturday.

It has not been suggested how long the Red Devil defender will be out of the squad for, but will be hugely missed as Mourinho's men attempt to rediscover their form domestically following a poor run.

Valencia is no stranger to being on the recovery table having been injured for the majority of last season, and only made 14 appearances for the club due to a series of small injuries.
