The contract saga surrounding Inter captain Mauro Icardi continues to rumble on, with the club on the verge of offering him an extension worth €7 million per season.
Both parties have been at an impasse for some time as they look to agree on a new contract for the Argentine, with the Nerazzurri showing an unwillingness to meet the striker’s €8m per year asking price.
However, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, a deal may be moving closer to being completed as Inter are now willing to increase their offer to the Argentina international and offer him a contract worth €7m annually.
Inter’s previous offer before Christmas to Icardi was for €6m plus bonuses but that was rejected by Icardi and his wife and representative Wanda Nara, despite the fact that it was a significant increase on his current contract.
Under the terms of his present deal, the ex-Sampdoria man earns €4.5m per season with the option for that to rise to €5.3m through various performance-based incentives.
The €6m contract offer was turned down by Icardi, who requested €8m instead and Inter now appear willing to meet him halfway with their offer of €7m as they are keen to reach a resolution.
In addition to a salary boost, the new contract for the forward includes a two-year extension, taking him up to 2023, while most importantly for the club, it would also remove the €110m release clause that is part of his current deal.
