Is La Liga Title Race Over? History Shows That Barcelona Will Find it Hard to Catch Madrid

Published on: 05 December 2016

Barcelona appear to have thrown away their chances of a third successive La Liga title following the 1-1 draw with bitter rivals Real Madrid, if history is anything to go by.

The Catalan club were on the verge of a crucial El Clasico victory on Saturday before Real captain Sergio Ramos' 90th minute equaliser, and the result may well have ended Barca's chances of pipping their counterparts to another league triumph if the past is anything to go by.

Ever since the introduction of three points for a league win, Barcelona have failed to overturn a six point deficit in Spain's top flight to secure the title - the very same points gap which now exists between Barca and Real after the draw at the Camp Nou on December 3.

But fear not Barca fans, because not all hope is lost and there are chinks of light to be found in Luis Enrique's current plight:

Barcelona recovered from an eight point deficit to beat Real to the La Liga trophy back in the 1991/92 campaign, when two points were awarded for each victory attained, while Real themselves overhauled Barca to be crowned champions in 2006/07 - seeing off their rivals by overturning a six point gap with 14 matches of that season left to play.

With Sevilla and Atletico Madrid also vying for the league title, La Liga is certainly set up for an interesting second half of the 2016/17 season!
