It was difficult but we had to cancel GPL- Nana Oduro Sarfo

Nana Oduro Sarfo, the CEO of Berekum Chelsea revealed that the GFA had no choice than to cancel the league due to the lack of a headline sponsor and the presence of COVID-19.

The GFA decided to truncate the 2019/20 GPL season on 30th June. No club was relegated. Asante Kotoko and AshantiGold were selected as representatives for the CAF continental competitions.

When asked about the cancellation of the league, Sarfo explained why.

“We played the first league, we couldn’t finish and second one was due to Anas expose and this is the third one so it was a very difficult decision”, he added.

“It was a very difficult decision for us to cancel the league, we called that day ‘the judgement day’ we started the meeting at 11am in the morning and ended at 7pm in the evening”, he told Nimdee FM.

CAF gave guidelines for member associations if they wanted to resume and it included a huge financial outlay which the GPL could not afford.

”We also don’t have sponsorship if you look at all these situations we have no choice than to cancel the league”.
