Italian stars top Roma’s summer wish list

There were just four Italian players in the Roma squad when Monchi was appointed sporting director in April 2017 but he reportedly plans to purchase more Italy internationals after the conclusion of the 2018/19 season.

Coach Eusebio Di Francesco failed to start any Italians when the Giallorossi drew 3-3 away to Chelsea in the 2017/18 Champions League group stage and this has prompted the club to look for more local talent.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma are interested in acquiring Sassuolo winger Domenico Berardi, Atalanta centre-back Gianluca Mancini, and Juventus defender Daniele Rugani in the summer, further Italianising the squad and adding more players with international experience.

Di Francesco has played nine Italian-born players so far in this campaign and the club intends to add more players that have trained together when selected for Roberto Mancini’s Azzurri side.
