Former Italy and Bayern Munich striker Luca Toni has recalled a terrifying ordeal wherein he was attacked while driving with Verona presidentMaurizio Setti.

A 'gang' of 15 peoplepelted the car with bottles, resulting in smashed windows and frightened passengers

Toni was in the car alongside Setti andclub director Francesco Barresi, who were allen route to Verona's Serie B clash against Avellino at theStadio Partenio.

The ex-striker toldSky Italia:The President had a blue scarf on, so perhaps they mistook us for regular Verona fans and didn't recognise us.

We were surrounded by 15 people, not fans and nothing to do with the good people of Avellino.

What's really disappointing is that 20 metres away were some police officers and they did nothing.

A glass beer came through the window and hit Setti, fortunately only in the stomach.I had thought with them around I'd feel protected, but they just stood there. Thanks to the driver, a friend of mine, we could [get] away.Football should be a celebration. This is shameful.

The attack was immediately reported to the police, who have also come under scrutiny for their lack of initialresponse to the attack.
