The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. John Dramani Mahama has promised that clubs that participate in Africa competitions will receive financial assistance from his government when they come to power.

According to the former president, he will oversee the setting up of a sports development fund that will generate money to support Ghanaian teams that play in the CAF Champions League and the Confederations Cup.

“For the championships on the continent, like a football team going out to play outside the country, sometimes they [clubs] don’t get money to buy tickets and a whole lot. We will use the sports development fund to help them so that they can compete so that they can bring trophies back to Ghana”, Mr. Mahama told journalists on the sidelines of a town hall meeting at KNUST to discuss the people’s manifesto.

The NDC flagbearer further shared that his government will through the sports development fund ensure that sportsmen and women are paid well.

“The government will put in some seed fund. Then apart from that the private sector, any company that will put money inside we will treat it at an expense for them so that they can deduct from their tax.

“So we will develop that sports fund so that we will be able to help our sportsmen and women for them to be paid very well”, he added.
