Johnson Smith has been appointed as the stop-gap coach at Asante Kotoko following the sacking of Norwegian gaffer Kjetil Zachariassen, Footballghana.com can report.

The former Karela United gaffer will take over the club's head coach role duties ahead of the start of the new season in December.

Coach Smith joined the Porcupine Warriors on a two-year deal earlier last month.

Asante Kotoko parted ways with Kjetil Zachariassen after failing to qualify to the team to the group stages of the 2019/20 CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup respectively.

Coach Smith has previously had stints at Sekondi Hasaacas, Bibiani GoldStars, Eleven Wise and Berekum Arsenals.

He guided Karela United to secure their first qualification to the Ghana Premier League during the 2017 season.

He also helped Karela reach the finals of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Normalisation Committee (NC) Special Competition where they lost to Asante Kotoko.
