Ghanaian striker Jordan Ayew laid-on an assist for the opening goal as his Aston Villa side were held 1-1 by Birmingham City on Sunday.

Ayew started Second City derby clash alongside his compatriot Albert Adomah, but the latter was replaced by Ross McCormack in the 25th minute after sustaining an injury.

Villa dominated the opening stages and got their reward when Gary Gardner headed-in a free kick by Ayew in the 29th minute.

Gardner's looping header was the difference at the break.

However, Ayew's side were denied all three points when David Davis scored after his initial effort was saved.

Ayew was replaced by Gabriel Agbonlahor in the 81st minute.

The result preserved Steve Bruce's two-game unbeaten run as Villa manager but left his side in 15th place on the 24-team log.
