Juventus 3-1 Napoli: Dybala Double Puts Juve in Driving Seat of Coppa Italia Sem-Final

Published on: 28 February 2017

An excellent second half comeback gave Juventus the advantage after the first leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final against Napoli on Tuesday night.

Jose Callejon had given the impressive visitors the lead in the first half, with the hosts looking uncharacteristically insipid.

But a Gonzalo Higuain goal either side of two Paolo Dybala penalties put Juventus in a strong, but not yet insurmountableposition ahead of the second leg at theStadio San Paolo.

The visitors started with the confidence andassurance of a team possessing the best away record in Italy's top division, although it was Juventus' Dybala that had the first chance of the game, denied when baring down on goal by an onrushing Pepe Reina.

Napoli, undoubtedly the more fluid and structured of the two sides, had nonetheless failed to trouble the hosts with the exception of long range efforts from Marek Hamsik and Lorenzo Insigne.

Higuain almost provided a typically abstract moment of brilliance, beating two players before poking a shot just over after the half hour mark. But it was Napoli that took a deserved lead moments later, Callejon appearing at the back post to convert Insigne's deflected pass.

For a side with such an imperious home record, Juventus had lacked both tempo and urgency in the first half, while Napoli had demonstrated impressive tactical discipline. Just before the break, however, Reina was called into action twice, the second of which was an impressive stop from close range to deny what seemed like an open goal.

Napoli's lead was immediately extinguished in the second half whenKalidou Koulibaly felled Dybala in the box, and the Argentine duly dispatched the resultant penalty.

Max Allegri had clearly instilled some much needed vigour into his players. The side that came out after the break were almost incomparable to that of the first half and were relatively dominant, taking the lead just after the hour mark. The previously impressiveReina misjudged a floating cross, allowing Higuain to slot into an empty net from a tight angle.

Just five minutes later Juventus were awarded another penalty, a rapid counter attack ending with substitute Juan Cuadrado taken out by Reina. Dybala's second penalty mirrored his first, as did the celebration in front of the increasingly raucous home support.

Napoli's second half, meanwhile, had been the antithesis of the first, and they appeared bereft of ideas in their search for aresponse. They were unable to find a way past a Juventus side content with their two goal advantage as an often franticgame drew to a quiet close.
