Juventus defender set for contract renewal to ward off Barcelona and Roma

Juventus are ready to hand centre-back Daniele Rugani an extension to his contract amidst interest from Serie A rivals Roma and Spanish champions Barcelona.

The Italian international has cut a peripheral figure at the Allianz Stadium as he looks to dislodge Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci from the first team, whilst also competing with Medhi Benatia.

It had led to suggestions earlier in the season that Roma would look to strike a deal for him, whilst Sport have claimed that Barcelona’s doubts over a knee injury sustained by Samuel Umtiti had seen them turn their attention to Rugani.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport however, the former Empoli man will instead pen a new contract with the Bianconeri, which would see him extend his existing deal by two years until June 2023.

The 24-year-old is expected to complete the deal early next month and will put paid to any hopes of luring him away from Turin in the January transfer window.

Since rejoining Juventus in 2015 after a loan spell at Empoli, Rugani has scored five goals in 72 appearances.
