Belgian giants KAA Gent have parted ways with Ghanaian defender Nana Asare after he was demoted to Team B in the on-going season.

The 34-year-old was deemed surplus to requirement as the club believes he is past his prime and they have acquired his replacement though he has one year left on his current contract.

According to Het Nieuwsblad, Asare mutually terminated his one year contract with the club and is now a free agent.

The Ghanaian international was the skipper of Gent until last year when he voluntarily gave the captain's armband to Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe who had also shown great leadership qualities.

Asare has made a total of 272 appearances, scored four goals and registered 16 assists for Gent since joining them in 2013 from Dutch side Utrecht. Two months ago, he was voted by fans of Gent in their official Best 11 players of the past decade.

He has previously played for Feyenoord Ghana (WAFA), Feyenoord Rotterdam, Royal Antwerp, KV Mechelen and FC Utrecht.
