Former Black Stars head coach, James Kwesi Appiah has been paid 2 months of his outstanding salary of five months, Kofi Asare Brako [Abatey] who is the personal aid to the Sports Minister has confirmed.
The experienced gaffer was shown the exit door in December 2019 when the Ghana Football Association (GFA) decided that it will not extend his contract.
He left his post while being owed 5 months' salary as well as winning bonuses for some matches. In the last few months, this has caused tension between the gaffer and the Sports Ministry which is responsible for paying his salary.
Speaking to Kumasi-based Nhyira FM today, Kofi Asare Brako has revealed that the Sports Ministry has started settling the debt and has already paid Coach Kwesi Appiah two months of what he is owed.
“It is true, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has paid 2 months of the salary out of the 5 months arrears owed to Coach Kwesi Appiah. It has been more than a week since the payment was made.
“We didn’t come out publicly with the news because we wanted to wait and pay everything first. For the two months, he was to receive $70,000 but we paid half of the money in dollars and the other half in Ghana Cedis", Abatey said.
He further stressed that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is making arrangements and will soon make settlements for the remaining arrears.
