Laurent Koscielny Becomes Arsenal's Highest Scoring Premier League Defender

Published on: 10 September 2016

Laurent Koscielny etched himself into the Arsenal history books on Saturday after his glorious overhead strike against Southampton made him the club's highest-ever scoring defender in the Premier League era.

The Frenchman, captaining his side at the Emirates Stadium, capitalised on a poor clearance from a corner by the Saints with a superb display of acrobatics, clinching a crucial equaliser in the process. The strike was Koscielny's 16th in the Premier League.

Incidentally, Koscielny turned 31 on Saturday, but age has certainly not stunted his agility - and it proved to be pivotal too, with Arsenal ultimately taking all three points in dramatic fashion after Santi Cazorla's 94th-minute penalty.

Arsene Wenger revealed that new signings Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez were taken aback by the blistering pace of the Premier League and feels both players will need time to adapt to their new league.

"I feel both are short, they lack competition and their second half was much better than their first.

"They were a bit surprised by the pace and commitment of the Premier League, but they will adapt to that. They were a bit on their nerves in the first half, but in the second half they were much better."
