League Leaders Liverpool Blitzed Another Amazing Premier League Record During Watford Hammering

Published on: 06 November 2016

Liverpool's hugely impressive 6-1 victory over Watford on Saturday took them to the summit of the Premier League for the first time since 2014 but the ferocious performance also dismantled another longstanding statistic.

Jurgen Klopp's men have been the Premier League's dominant attacking force this season; scoring a scarcely believable 30 goals in just eleven matches so far. That thirst for goals was very much on show at Anfield with strikes from Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho, Emre Can, Georginino Wijnaldum and a double from SadioMane.

But the victory, which was Klopp's biggest home win as Reds boss, also broke the record for most shots on target in the Premier League since Opta Records began in the 2003/04 season.

Watford goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon had to deal with an incredible 17 shots on target as a purring Liverpool side dismantled the bewildered hornets.

17 - Liverpool recorded more shots on target today than any other team has managed in a PL match since Opta records began (2003-04). Top.

The performance led manager Walter Mazzarri to name Liverpool as the best side that they had faced this season.

"First of all, congratulations to Liverpool because I am very, very impressed," the Italian told reporters. "Not only tactically but even on the running and the pressing. They are a really great team.

"From the teams that we have played against, there is no doubt that it is the team I am most impressed with.

"If they continue like this, then they are No. 1 in my list for winning the Premier League. Of course this is only from the teams that we have played against."
