Legendary coach Herbert Addo to be buried on Saturday

The football family will this weekend converge to bid their final farewell to Coach Herbert Obuobi Addo, who died on March 24 after a short illness.

The body will be laid in state at his residence, Addo Farms, Oyarifa on Saturday, from 4:30am to 6:00am with the burial service being held at the same venue.

The body of Coach Addo, aged 66, will then be conveyed to Aburi for burial at the Methodist Church Cemetery after which the final funeral rites will be held at his residence.

A memorial and thanksgiving service will take place on Sunday, at the Aburi Wesley Methodist Church at 9:30am and this will be followed by a family gathering at his residence.

The late Coach Addo, also nicknamed Lazoo, was a local hero in Ghana football, given the number of clubs he handled in addition to handling the Black Stars, both the regular and Team B.

He coached over 15 different clubs in his career, winning the Ghana Premier Leaguem(GPL) on two occasions with two different clubs. He also guided the Black Stars to win the WAFU Championship for national teams in 1986 and 1987.

Among the clubs he coached were Agona Fankobaa, Okwahu United, Sekondi Hasaacas, Tema Ghapoha, Accra Hearts of Oak, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Ashantigold FC, Aduana Stars who he helped to win their first and only Ghana Premier League (GPL) title to date, Wassaman and Inter Allies.

Indeed, Coach Addo became more popular for his tactics which he often employed to save relegation-threatened clubs he handled.

He is survived by the widow, Mrs Gifty Acquah Addo, and seven children: Juliana, Adadzewa, Philomena, Perpetual, Michael, Dorothy and Gabriel.
