Liverpool academy director Alex Inglethorpe is delighted with the appointment of Steven Gerrard as U18 coach.

Inglethorpe has been impressed by Gerrard's contribution to a number of age groups since he joined the Kirkby staff three months ago and says he's ready to take the step up.

“Steven has brought invaluable experience and knowledge to us since joining the Academy, passing on some fantastic advice and guidance to our younger players," he said.

“We both feel now is the perfect time for him to take the next step in his coaching career and manage his own team.

“The under-18 players can undoubtedly only learn from having someone like Steven in charge and we have no doubt that he will prove to be a huge success in the position."

Gerrard will take over from Neil Critchley, who has been appointed as the club's new under-23s boss after a four-year stint with the under-18s.
