Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has been named England U21 captain.

Gomez has been selected by boss Aidy Boothroyd to lead the Young Lions during their upcoming Euro 2019 qualification campaign.

It caps a fine few weeks for the 20-year-old, who has recovered fully from 18 months of injury problems and made a strong return to first-team action at Anfield.

Tweeting his reaction to the news, Gomez wrote: “I'm delighted to be given the role, it's an honour! Thank you for the support."

England U21 coach Aidy Boothroyd said: “He's just one of those blokes who you think 'I could be in the trenches with you'. He's well respected in the group, so he is the one."
