Liverpool Youngster Wilson Hoping to Make First-Team Debut Under Boss Jurgen Klopp

Published on: 04 October 2016

Liverpool youngster Harry Wilson has said he believes that he has a great chance of breaking into the first-team fold under current boss Jurgen Klopp.

The 19-year-old is hopeful over finally making his senior bow during the 2016/17 campaign and, with Klopp at the helm, thinks he will have no better opportunity to do so.

Wilson was loaned out to Crewe Alexandra in the first six months of the 2015/16 campaign, but featured just seven times for the League Two outfit before heading back to Anfield.

The right-sided winger is yet to appear for Liverpool's senior side, despite being on the books at the club since the age of nine.

However, the Wales Under-21 international still harbours ambitions of making it with the Reds, and was buoyed by watching fellow academy graduates Ovie Ejaria, Ben Woodburn, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Shevi Ojo all play their part for the first team under Klopp.

Wilson now hopes that he is the next player off the production line to be handed an opportunity to impress by the former Borussia Dortmund manager.

He said: "It's great that he's willing to give the youngsters a chance if you're playing well and doing well.

"Everything we do we try and mirror the first team. When you're in there it's up to you to do well then so if I keep doing well for the Under-23s, hopefully my chance will come."

The Liverpool Under-23s captain also stated that it was an honour to have been handed the armband for the Reds' youth side, as well as commenting on the spate of injuries he suffered during a stop-start 2015/16 campaign for him personally.

Wilson added: The captaincy is a massive honour for me and added responsibility but one I'm happy to have. I think I'm a leader in a different way. I'm not going to do it with my mouth on the pitch.

Maybe if the team needs a bit of inspiration during the game, I can provide that and push them forward.

Last season didn't go as well as I wanted and I missed a large part of the season with injuries.

It was nice to be offered a new contract (in the summer) and now that I'm fit I can show the club the qualities that I've got and work my way up to the first team.
