Liverpool's Move for Georginio Wijnaldum Stalls as Clubs Fail to Agree on Fee

Georginio Wijnaldum's move to Liverpool appears to have hit a stumbling block, with the Reds currently unable to agree a fee with the newly-relegated Championship club over the transfer of the 25-year-old.

Press Association Sportclaimthat the two clubs have discussed a potential fee for the Dutch midfield star, but that the terms proposed by the Reds don't meet the Magpies' requirements with regards to a fee.

Earlierreportsclaimed thatWijnaldum has made it clear that he wants to quit the Geordie club this summer in search of Premier League football, and Liverpool appear to be the favourites to snap up the Dutch international in time for the beginning of the new campaign in less than a month's time.

Discussions are said to have taken place over whether the Reds could purchase the midfielder through staggered payments, but Rafa Benitez's sideare only interested in a lump sum, and have suggested that anything less than £27m will not even be considered.

A part-exchange deal has also beenmooted, withJon Flanagan and Lucas Leiva the two most likely players to makethe switch from Anfield to St James' Park, as neither of them are likely to feature prominently in Jurgen Klopp's starting line-up next season.

The Magpies aren't expected to be swayed by the offer of Liverpool's cast-offs though, as they look to keep hold of the midfielder who hit11 goals last year in his debut Premier League campaign.

The 25-year-old's form dipped slightly in the latter stages of last season as Newcastle tried in vain the maintain their status in the top flight, but that is no decisive deterrent for Klopp and Liverpool, who view him as an ideal candidate to energise their midfield.
