Liverpool's New Sporting Director Wants to Tie Down Two Reds Stars to New Deals

Liverpool's new sporting directorMichael Edwards wants totie downEmre Can and Philippe Coutinho, as well as a number of other Liverpool stars,to new contracts, according toreports.


The 37-year-old was officiallynamed as Liverpool's sporting directorat the start of November, and will be tasked with making big decisions at the club in terms of transfers and contracts.

And his first port of call will reportedlybe signing midfielders Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho to new deals, as Can's contract runs out in 2018, while Coutinho has been under intense transfer interest from the likes of Barcelona.


Edwards will play a key role in the January transfer window, and is said to be liaisingwith Jurgen Klopp over who to sign withMahmoud Dahoud and Christian Pulisic being touted as potential suitors.

Edwards has now been at Anfield since 2011, earning four promotions along his way to his new sporting director role.

He is said to have played a bigrole in the signings of Roberto Firmino, Emre Can, Divock Origi, Sadio Mane, Loris Karius and Joel Matip, all of whom signed for a combined £83.45m.


Divock Origi, Alberto Moreno, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren have contracts running until 2019, anduMAXitare reporting that negotiations may begin soon to sign the quadrant to extended deals.
