Luis Enrique Gives His Verdict on Barcelona's Champions League Campaign So Far

Published on: 23 November 2016

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique was pleased to see his team secure their progression to the Champions League knockout rounds with a game to spare after a 2-0 win over Celtic in Wednesday night's penultimate set of group fixtures.

The victory in Scotland gave Barça 12 points from five games and ensured they cannot now be caught by second place Manchester City, who are four points behind.

"I congratulate the team for qualifying," Enrique told the media afterwards.

"To do that with a game in hand in one of the toughest groups in the competition is something to be commended," he added.

"My players were attentive in all areas and were clinical over the last few metres, where Messi was as good as he always is."

Messi scored both Barcelona goals on the night, taking his personal Champions League tally to 92 in 110 appearances. It was also the 100th goal he has scored in international club competitions, which include strikes in the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

The other notable moment on the night came in the form of a Barça debut for Brazilian defender Marlon, the 21-year-old currently on loan from Fluminense.

Impressive form forthe club's B team since arriving in the summer and recent injuries to more senior players handed Marlon the opportunity to become more involved with the first-team squad, culminating in Wednesday night's 20 minute cameo after replacing Gerard Pique.

"I still can't believe it, it was a dream debut," he said.

"I'll take away this shirt, get my teammates to sign it and then hang it on the wall."
