Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand can understand manager Jose Mourinho publicly criticising his players.
Mourinho has criticised Luke Shaw's apparent lack of effort in training, his strikers' inability to find the back of the net, and has questioned Chris Smalling and Phil Jones for not opting to play through injuries.
Ferdinand told BT Sport: “I think this is borne out of frustration that he can't field his best team, he can't find his best team to play consistently because of the injuries he's had.
"It's disrupted all his preparations for games. Each week there's a player that falls away and I think that's the frustration that comes out in his press conferences I think for him.
"I don't think he came here not expecting to play 55-60 games in a season. I don't think he expected, no one expected the number of injuries he's had."
Ferdinand added: "You've heard him, he sounds frustrated with the collective, but also individuals. He wants them getting out there, playing through injuries.
"I think with the modern player sometimes I think they're not as eager to get out there and play. They don't risk themselves as much as those players in past years."
