Manchester City 1-1 Middlesbrough: Late Marten De Roon Equaliser Snatches Point for Boro

Published on: 04 November 2016

Middlesbrough snatched a point at the Etihad Stadium with a late Marten de Roon goal to draw 1-1 with Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's men couldn't put the game to bed, and paid the ultimate price as Boro equalised in injury time.

Guardiola made three changes to the side that beat Barcelona 3-1 in Champions League midweek, with Claudio Bravo, Aleksandar Kolarov and Jesus Navas all coming back into the side.

Meanwhile, Marten De Roon forGaston Ramirez was the only change for Boro from the team that beat Bournemouth 2-0.

Middlesbrough really struggled to get out of their own half in the opening 20 minutes with City dominating the ball and the game. Guardiola's side had a lot of possession in and around the Boro box,but they remainedresolute defensively.

Aitor Karanka's menwere thencaught up the pitch for the first time in the match, but Kevin De Bruyne couldn't make them pay as his left-footed shot glanced just past Victor Valdes's post.

The chances started to come as City stepped it up a gear. A John Stones header just eluded Sergio Aguero at the far post,David Silva had a close-range shot saved, and Aguero hit a volley just wide.

The goal that City full deserved came just before the break. A delightful cross from deep by De Bruyne found its way toAguero, and hestabbed the ballhome from inside the six-yard box for his 150th Citygoal.

Navas nearly made it 2-0, but his shot hit the outside of the post. City went into half time with a well-earned lead.

Within a minute of the restart, Bravo had to makehis first save of the match.Alvaro Negredo saw the goalkeeper off his line, and his effort from the half-way line had to be tipped over by the Chilean.

He was called into action again as Adam Forshaw broke the City line. Bravo spread himself well to save, but Boro looked like a different team in the second half, pushing far higher up the pitch and enjoying more possession.

The second 45 minutes was far more even than the first, with Karanka's side actually offering something going forward. But they were vulnerable defensively, and Silva went close as Boro committed more men to their attack.

De Bruyne then delivered another brilliant cross from the left-hand side, but Aguero couldn't get over the ball and blazed his header over the bar.

Aguero really should have put the game to bed on 86 minutes. Navas cut the ball back to the penalty spot and there was the Argentine, but he couldn't even hit the target with his effort.

City were made to rue their missed opportunities as, in the 91st minute, de Roon powered a header past Bravo at the back post to equalise for Boro and steal a point.
