Manchester United Considering Last-Ditch Attempt to Sign Real Madrid Defender

Manchester United are said to be considering one final attempt to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, with Jose Mourinho believed to want one more top-class centre-back to beef up his defence for his first Premier League campaign at Old Trafford.

Reports in Spain claim that Mourinho is set to try one final raid on his former club to get Varane before the end of the transfer window at the end of the month, bringing a summer of big spending to a close.

AS claim that Mourinho has made Varane his number one target for the rest of the summer, after failing to sign the Frenchman earlier in the transfer window, but a move looks some way off due to Real Madrid's reluctance to part with their third-choice central defender.

Pepe and Sergio Ramos should be firmly entrenched as the club's starting pair at the back, but Varane is a more-than capable rotation option for Zinedine Zidane to have in his locker in case of emergencies - and one which he hopes to keep hold of.

There would also likely be a hold-up on United's end of the deal, withMourinho reportedly being told by club bosses that he must ship out some of the fringe players in his squad before he is allowed to make any further purchases this summer.

The club completed their first sales of the summer this week, offloading Donald Love and Paddy McNair to Sunderland for a joint fee in the region of £5.5m, and are expected to trim their squad further in the coming weeks leading up to the end of the transfer window, but it would take more than just the sales of one or two youngsters to free up budget space for Varane.
