Manchester United v West Ham: Classic Encounter, Team News, Key Battles and More

Published on: 25 November 2016

Manchester United and West Ham are both in a desperate up-turn for results to progress up the table after less than impressive starts by both their standards.

Jose Mourinho will be looking to take inspiration from his side's 4-0 thrashing over Feynoord in an attempt to close the gap on the top four.

While West Ham will be looking to quickly make way from their current position, only one place above the relegation zone, although the Hammers have only won twice in their last 23 visits to Old Trafford.

Coming back into the second half, Wayne Rooney provided the firepower to bring back a Manchester comeback despite the deficit. He scored his sides first goal with a well hit free-kick.

The English forward then brought about an equaliser after controlling a pass, wiping two defenders out of the game in the process to calmly slot beyond Robert Green.

The away side were then gifted a penalty following Matthew Upson's handball, Rooney seized the opportunity to complete his hat-trick and give his side the lead for this first time in the match, before Hernandez made his way onto the score-sheet to secure the three points.

Key Battles

Zlatan Ibrahimovic v Chiekhou Kouyate

Since Slaven Bilic has reverted to playing three central defenders we have seen teams finding them harder to break down than the side that was gifting away goals earlier this season.

Playing a big part in that back three is Kouyate, having previously operated as a midfielder he offers slightly more pace then some of his teammates and will be crucial in controlling Ibrahimovic on his return from his ban and hungry for goals.

Antonio Valencia v Dimitri Payet

We all know what Dimitri Payet can do, the attacking ability he posses is vital to the Hammers. Being expected to play on the left side, the talented Frenchman will have his work cut out against Antonio Valencia who's pace will cause a blow to his runs. Payet will have to once again have to show his creative side in the hunt for West Ham goals.

Team News and Predicted Lineups

The biggest news for Manchester United fans is that Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be hoping he has done enough in midweek to work his side into the starting lineup this weekend, as will Wayne Rooney after he opened the sides scoring in an impressive display.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is expected to be reinstated to the lineup following his suspension that meant he missed his side's game last week against Arsenal.

Jose Mourinho is still without Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly in the defence meaning that we could once again see a back two of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo, while Michael Carrick is likely to return to the midfield.

West Ham are currently without centre back Winston Reid following his dismissal at White Hart Lane last week, meaning James Collins is expected to step-up in his absence.

Gokhan Tore may recover in time for the trip to Old Trafford, but it's unlikely he will start unless he can built up his match fitness quick enough, so Lanzini could start on the right-wing in his place.

The Croatian manager is expected to name Diafra Sakho as his sole striker in place of Juventus loanee striker Simone Zaza. Andy Carroll is still sideline with his knee injury.

Manchester United's likely lineup: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Rojo, Darmian, Pogba, Carrick, Mata, Rooney, Mkhitaryan, Ibrahimovic.

West Ham's likely lineup: Adrian, Kouyate, Collins, Ogbonna, Antonio, Noble, Obiang, Cresswell, Lanzini, Payet, Sakho

Prediction

Both sides are under-performing by their standards; West Ham sit just above the drop-zone while Manchester United can only look and watch on at the teams above them, as they sit in sixth place.

The Red Devils made light work of Feynoord in the Europa League and will take inspiration from their rout to bring into this game at the Theatre of Dreams with unexpected impressive performances from both Rooney and Mkhitaryan.

Going by form alone Manchester United should comfortably win this game, with their turf being a place West Ham have struggled to get results from.

The power and ability that Mourinho's team possesses is more than capable of over-turning a below par West Ham side edging close to turmoil.

Prediction: Manchester United 3-1 West Ham
