Mariners owning up says Montgomery

Published on: 16 November 2018

Central Coast Mariners know what they need to do to turn their recent poor form around, says assistant coach Nick Montgomery.

The Mariners have shipped seven goals in their past two games, at home to Adelaide United and away to defending champions Melbourne Victory.

Those setbacks came after Mike Mulvey's side drew their opening two matches 1-1.

They have the chance during the international break to work on their failings in the past two rounds, which Montgomery says will involve only some simple tweaks.

Ahead of their trip to leaders Perth Glory on 25th November, the former Mariners stalwart said: "Away to Melbourne we made some poor decisions that cost us goals. We own that as a group, we learn from it and we need to cut out those mistakes because there's some real positives we can take from that game.

"What we have is a fantastic group of players who are all working for each other and will all own up to their mistakes. It's not an individual - it's a collective as a team, including the coaching staff."

Mental attitude was one of the team's failings against Victory, said Montgomery, as the players' heads had dropped after they conceded the first goal on the half-hour mark.

The coaching staff addressed the players at half-time and were happy at the way they improved in the second half, but the damage had already been done as they'd gone into the break 3-0 down.

Matt Simon, who missed the game with a minor calf problem, should be available when they go to Perth.

With only four rounds gone, Montgomery says it's very early and the club have the chance to move on and learn from their mistakes.

"We've shown plenty of good stuff this season," he added. "It's time to get back on the horse and charge forward as they say."

The Mariners are 6/1 to win their next game against Perth, who are 2/5, with the draw 15/4.
