Martinez stars as Atlanta win

Atlanta United kept the pressure on the Philadelphia Union with a 2-1 triumph over the New York City FC at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Josef Martinez scored twice and set an MLS record, as he has now netted at least one goal in 10 consecutive games.

Atlanta, 8/1 to win the MLS Cup, briefly took over top spot in the Eastern Conference as they played a couple of hours before the Union, 11/1.

Miles Robinson opened the scoring for the hosts in the 32nd minute; at least the defender did until VAR caught the two-handed push in the back of a City defender before heading home. Three minutes later Atlanta were ahead for real when Martinez soared at the far post to head home Julian Gressel's superb cross.

Pity Martinez earned a penalty in the second half that Josef Martínez coolly dispatched before Heber scored a late consolation effort for New York City FC.

The visitors slipped to fourth in the table but still have three games in hand over the Union and DC United and two over Atlanta and the New York Red Bulls.

The 2-1 scoreline was a favourite on the day in the Eastern Conference as the Union defeated the Houston Dynamo and DC United got the better of the LA Galaxy by the same margin.

That was enough to see Philadelphia, Atlanta and DC United one, two and three in the standings at the end of the day with New York City fourth and the Red Bulls fifth after they were doubled up 4-2 by LAFC.
